Reflections & Practice Drawings

Still life

In this piece, I attempted and mastered grid technique, and as a result, successfully recreated the shapes and composition of the original artwork in my interpretation of it. However, I did encounter some difficulty with value. Take the shadow of the bowl in this piece, for example. If I were to draw this again, I would decrease the amount of contrast between the shading of the background and the shading of the bowl's shadow to make it appear more realistic. I also would likely decrease the value of the cylinder's dark outline in an effort to match it with the much more subtle outlines of the other shapes in the piece.

In addition to these revisions, there were also plenty decisions I made during the process that I would not change, including the cool colors I chose (which were intended to evoke sense of calmness when studied by the audience). I also began this piece drawing harsher lines, but realized over time that this technique clashed with the visually mild, soothing message I was trying to convey. So I made a decision to make more smooth and blended lines, with a few exceptions (for the purpose of highlighting softer, rounded shapes).
